Giving

Jesus was a law keeper. He followed the law of Moses and put it into practice perfectly. Many times He referenced the law and also referred to tithing. Jesus often pointed out the religious leaders’ failures to follow the law although they were educated experts. His frequent admonishment was that the leaders followed the letter of the law, but neglected the spirit of the law. Jesus made such a statement when speaking of tithing, saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone,” (Matthew 23:23). Jesus’ point was that giving a tithe was not enough; one must also exercise compassion.
Jesus also taught that giving should be done privately. He stated, “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” (Matthew 6:1-4 NIV).
Blessings are associated with giving, Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you,” (Luke 6:38). Jesus also said, “…give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” (Luke 20:25 NIV).

What is a Tithe?

A tithe is a tenth, ten percent. A tithe is a giving principle established throughout the Bible as a way of proportional giving to God. No one is expected to give more because of his prosperity or less because of his poverty. Abraham and Jacob exemplified tithing before God established formal tithing in the law with Moses.
Abraham tithed to the priest Melchizadek. “This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything,” (Hebrews 7:1-2 NIV). Jacob made a vow to God to tithe to Him after having a dream where he saw heaven open up. Jacob ended his vow, saying, “and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth,” (Genesis 28:22 NIV).
The prophet Malachi said the tithe should be brought into the storehouse, i.e., God’s house. At that time, the nation of Israel was neglecting their tithing, and Malachi equated this with robbery of God. He commanded the people to tithe and added two interesting points: Malachi said to the nation that God would provide blessings from heaven that they would not have room enough to hold and they could test God in this (Malachi 3:8-12 and Proverbs 3:9-10).
